West Sussex County Council is set to carry out vital refurbishment work on the Hazlewick Avenue flyover in Crawley from Feb 9th 2013 for 16 weeks. The flyover structure, which consists of two bridges that straddle the Hazlewick Roundabout, is 40 years old and its condition is deteriorating. Work needs to be done to install new bearings, add a waterproof membrane, expansion joints and to resurface the road.

For safety reasons, the flyover will be closed to traffic throughout the duration of the work. It is anticipated the closure will last for a maximum of 16 weeks.

Advance warning signs will be in place weeks before the work starts and local diversions will be clearly signposted.

County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, Pieter Montyn, said: “We recognise this essential refurbishment is likely to result in significant disruption to motorists, which is why we have taken the step of announcing it as early as possible.

Unfortunately there is never a convenient time to carry out works of this nature. But once this is finished, the flyover’s lifespan will be extended for a further 25 years.
