Crawley Debate 2014
Held on Wed 5th Feb at the Civic Hall Crawley
Item 1
Flooding in Ifield.
Discussions took place on how to stop future flooding in Ifield. It was felt that if drains and gullies had been flushed last year then flooding would not have been as bad.
Item 2
Is crime getting worse in Crawley.
Despite negative press crime is actually down in Crawley based on the previous year’s figures.
Item 3
Would Crawley Council be revising its view on the wide option runway at Gatwick?
The council stressed that it has a waiting view on the runway until such time as more information is forthcoming. The 7th platform at Gatwick is due to be opened this week. Despite concerns in Crawley about the airport various surveys have been carried out by the Council and in all cases the results have been evenly split. To prove the point the Panel asked for a show of hands for those who wanted a 2nd runway and those who were against. The result was again an even split.
Item 4
Langley Green Surgery.
As a result of the storms on the 23rd Dec and the roof being blown off the Surgery would be shut for about 10 months. 10,000 patients would have to be relocated as a result of this and Southgate would try to help as much as possible. Having looked at all the options Cross Keys Surgery in the town centre would serve all those that needed help until the Langley Green Surgery was fixed. Whilst on the subject of health all present were advised that more services would be returning to Crawley Hospital in the near future.
Item 5
Town Centre regeneration. What lessons have been learnt by the recent financial problems.
The Council advised all that future plans would be selective and not global and pressure would be put on building owners to enable redevelopment to take place. The Council also announced that 3 million pounds had been allocate by West Sussex County Council and Crawley Council to redevelop Queens Square.

What is being done to make enough space for homes in Crawley and were Brownfield sites & Offices being considered?
The Council advised that Brownfield sites were being considered. Also partnerships were being agreed with other local Councils to build on the borders of Crawley. Although the Council and Local Businesses were in principal against the use of office space this decision may have been overruled by the Government to allow such development to take place. There were plans in the pipeline for future development of 1900 homes at Forge Wood and 900 in the Town Centre.
Item 7
Support for disadvantaged children aged between the ages of 4 and 17.
Although Crawley Council is working closely with local Charities it does not have funds available. John Peel advised that he knew of 2 sources of funding that were available for these type of charities and asked all that needed to know to approach him after the meeting.
Item 8
Controlled Parking Zones.
It was agreed that these zones had been successful in Crawley but there was a serious risk that these zones may spread to encompass the whole of Crawley. Local businesses in the 13 local community areas asked that if introduced these zones should not affect their shopping areas.
Item 9
How do we promote Crawley.
The panel all gave a short talk on why Crawley was a great Town and that all present should be proud to be part of it. There were many items of good news and all in Crawley should continue to push for a new Hospital possibly at Pease Pottage. As a final reminder all present were advised that although Crawley only represented 2% of the South East’s Population it produced 37% of the turnover.
The meeting started at 7pm and ended at 9pm.
