I am writing to you with details of Gatwick Airport’s final submission to the Airports Commission, which sets out all the evidence in support of our case for building a second runway. Our submission can be found here http://gatwickbettersolution.tumblr.com/
The evidence we have provided the Commission shows that a second runway at Gatwick positioned to the south of the current site and as part of a ‘constellation’ of competing airports, will meet the connectivity needs for London and the UK for a generation, boost choice and enhance competition.
We have provided a robust and compelling case outlining why the next runway should be built at London Gatwick and believe it is the most affordable, sustainable and deliverable solution for London and for the UK.
Our ‘constellation’ approach would spread the economic profits of expansion more widely, deliver the benefits of competition in terms of choice and value for passengers, and be more affordable, resilient and environmentally sustainable than competing ‘mega hub’ options.
Specifically, a second runway at Gatwick would:
- Create 19,000 new jobs across the South East
- Contribute up to £1.66bn a year to the economy of the South East
- Generate around £56 billion for the UK economy
- Enable Gatwick to handle 90 million passengers a year
- Meet forecast demand well into the 2040s
- Cost between £5 and £9 billion to construct and can be open in 2025
- Be wholly privately financed
- Result in fewer people affected by noise than at Heathrow
Our evidence clearly shows that an additional runway at Gatwick would best serve the needs of all passengers and give certainly to airlines, communities and businesses. It would create the connectivity the UK needs whilst spreading the economic benefits and environmental impacts.
